Week 8: Solutions from Around the World

What Are Other Countries Doing Right?

Uruguay’s water crisis may feel overwhelming, but there’s hope — and inspiration — in what other countries are doing to protect their water. All over the world, places facing similar problems have come up with creative, science-based solutions that could work here too.

Let’s start with Israel, one of the driest countries on Earth. Despite having very little rainfall, Israel recycles about 85% of its wastewater — more than any other country in the world. They use this recycled water for farming, which helps preserve clean water for drinking and hygiene. Israel also uses smart irrigation systems like drip irrigation, which sends just the right amount of water directly to plant roots with no waste.

Then there’s Singapore, a small island nation that used to depend on water from other countries. Today, Singapore treats wastewater using high-tech purification methods and even uses desalination, which turns seawater into clean drinking water. Their tap water is now among the cleanest in the world. They also have a national campaign called “Every Drop Counts” to encourage people to save water daily.

Australia has also faced long droughts. In response, they created large water storage systems, upgraded their urban plumbing infrastructure, and invested heavily in public education campaigns. Now, cities like Melbourne have significantly reduced water use per person — without lowering quality of life.

These examples prove that change is possible. With the right tools, planning, and public support, Uruguay can build a more secure water future. But we need leaders, scientists, and regular citizens — like you — to push for those solutions.
